Tradition

At the root of a Workhouse GARMENT is the time taken to master its fit. Trained at Huntsman on Savile Row our cutter comes to the studio where we work on the fit and construction details combining old and new methods.

Clothes born of formal tailoring, but worn informally.

Heritage

Rooted in British culture, GARMENTS to compliment Britain’s spirt and climate. Its brick work and its peoples; bold resilient, stylish and and timeless. All our garments have a handmade approach that pays homage to traditional cloth.

Meticulously made in England, giving them an English feel.

Silhouette

Workhouse is immersive in a sense that as your wearing it whether a coat or jacket you feel the passion of the GARMENT surround you. Its wonderful to have something with emotional weight and humbling to see the trace of the maker.

Collide

Collisions are a surprise, but we encourage them. Between fabrics, ages and styles, the places we buy are cloth and the people we buy from. They all go into the Workhouse melting pot. I merge tradition, experimentation and emotion to create GARMENTS with a wholly unique character.

Nature

I look to source natural materials - linens, wools, cotton direct from the best British, Scottish and Irish mills.

Then to mix it with antique French textiles London and French markets or DEADSTOCK CLOTH These are cloths that have been hidden away in warehouses, rather like Elephants graveyards. I look for original timeless cloth that has authenticity which will suit Workhouse GARMENTS.

Made in England

Working alongside the craftsmen who helped us restore our Victorian workshop, Workhouse was born out of a renewed appreciation for the hidden beauty in old things. Drawn to images of the Victorian street, we became particularly interested in unposed photographs of street traders and musicians. Whether a distinctive jacket, or a favorite hat, the garments and images where hand made, made to last – and often made for someone else. Formal worn informally, old with new, contrasting fabrics and textures – all with a certain swagger. We wanted to craft garments that captured this.
